Most loved and Most hated programming language – PHP

In 2004, when Mark Zuckerberg sat down to create the site that needs no introduction, he chose PHP. Moving forward the code grew and it is currently one of the biggest websites the world has ever seen. If you know the early history of Facebook, you’d know that it was not meant to be the behemoth that it is today. There had to be something wise about Mark to choose PHP for the task and something equally incredible from PHP to carry his website to create a worldwide phenomenon. Probably it is the same thing in PHP which attracts or attracted anyone else to work with it.

Welcome to the world’s most loved and most hated programming language – PHP.

History

PHP was originally called PHP/FI (Personal Home Page/ Form Interpreter) in 1994 when it was originally designed and was renamed to PHP Tools in 1995 before it was renamed to just PHP in 1997 with the release of version 3.0. The initial name of PHP clearly suggests that it was not designed to be what it appears as today – the king of web programming language. The initial public release of PHP in 1995 had quite surprisingly a large set of the basic capabilities that it still has today and made mostly internal improvements across versions.

Significance and programming

PHP is known for being one of the easiest programming languages to start off with, and is thus used by a large number of programmers who are starting out.

Another point where PHP shines out is being an almost web-exclusive language. While PHP can be easily and effectively used for system scripts, it was built for handling websites and flaunts features which address issues specific to web development such as handling forms submission, user sessions, cookies and loose data types. PHP is designed to work in a ‘single request-single response’ environment where the script starts working when a request comes in, processes the request, generates the response, sends it to the client and then exists. The next time the same script it’s requested, it runs again, serves the request and again ends the requests sporadically to the server. At the same time, it can also be used to create sustainable services, which keep running indefinitely. This makes PHP suitable for working with WebSockets API introduced in PHP5.

How does PHP look?

$x = 2;

$x_square = $x *$x;

$result = “The square of $x is: “ .$x_square;

Echo $result;

?>

This small program shows a good deal of features of PHP which make web development easy. The output of this program is:

Value of $x is 2 The square of 2 is: 4

I have shown a simple example above.

Wearable computers as harmful as cigarettes..????

In 1946, a new advertising campaign appeared in magazines with a picture of a doctor in a lab coat holding a cigarette and the slogan, "More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette." No, this wasn't a spoof. Back then, doctors were not aware that smoking could cause cancer, heart disease and lung disease.

In a similar vein, some researchers and consumers are now asking whether wearable computers will be considered harmful in several decades' time.

We have long suspected that cellphones, which give off low levels of radiation, could lead to brain tumors, cancer, disturbed blood rhythms and other health problems if held too close to the body for extended periods.

Yet here we are in 2015, with companies like Apple and Samsung encouraging us to buy gadgets that we should attach to our bodies all day long.

While there is no definitive research on the health effects of wearable computers (the Apple Watch isn't even on store shelves yet), we can hypothesize a bit from existing research on cellphone radiation.

The most definitive and arguably unbiased results in this area come from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a panel within the World Health Organization (WHO) that consisted of 31 scientists from 14 countries.

After dissecting dozens of peer-reviewed studies on cellphone safety, the panel concluded in 2011 that cellphones were "possibly carcinogenic" and that the devices could be as harmful as certain dry-cleaning chemicals and pesticides. (Note that the group hedged its findings with the word "possibly.")

The WHO panel concluded that the farther away a device is from one's head, the less harmful -- so texting or surfing the Web will not be as dangerous as making calls, with a cellphone inches from the brain. (This is why there were serious concerns about Google Glass when it was first announced and why we've been told to use hands-free devices when talking on cellphones.)

A longitudinal study conducted by a group of European researchers and led by Dr Lennart Hardell, a professor of oncology and cancer epidemiology at Orebro University Hospital in Sweden, concluded that talking on a mobile or cordless phone for extended periods could triple the risk of a certain kind of brain cancer.

There is, of course, antithetical research. But some of this was partly funded by cellphone companies or trade groups.

One example is the international Interphone study, which was published in 2010 and did not find strong links between mobile phones and an increased risk of brain tumors.

Another study, in The BMJ, which measured cellphone subscription data rather than actual use, said there was no proof of increased cancer. Yet even here, the Danish team behind the report acknowledged that a "small to moderate increase" in cancer risk among heavy cellphone users could not be ruled out.

But what does all this research tell the Apple faithful who want to rush out and buy an Apple Watch, or the Google and Windows fanatics who are eager to own an alternative smartwatch.

Dr Joseph Mercola, a physician who focuses on alternative medicine and has written extensively about the potential harmful effects of cellphones on the human body, said that as long as a wearable does not have a 3G connection built into it, the harmful effects are minimal, if any.

"The radiation really comes from the 3G connection on a cellphone, so devices like the Jawbone Up and Apple Watch should be OK," Mercola said in a phone interview. "But if you're buying a watch with a cellular chip built in, then you've got a cellphone attached to your wrist." And that, he said, is a bad idea.

(The Apple Watch uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to receive data, and researchers say there is no proven harm from those frequencies on the human body. Wearables with 3G or 4G connections built in, including the Samsung Gear S, could be more harmful, though that has not been proved. Apple declined to comment for this article, and Samsung could not be reached for comment.)

Researchers have also raised concerns about having powerful batteries so close to the body for extended periods of time. Some reports over the last several decades have questioned whether being too close to power lines could cause leukemia (though other research has also negated this).

So what should consumers do? Perhaps we can look at how researchers themselves handle their smartphones.

While Mercola is a vocal proponent of cellphone safety, he told me to call him on his cell when I emailed about an interview. When I asked him whether he was being hypocritical, he replied that technology is a fact of life, and that he uses it with caution. As an example, he said he was using a Bluetooth headset during our call.

In the same respect, people who are concerned about the possible side effects of a smartwatch should avoid placing it close to their brain (besides, it looks a little strange). But there are some people who may be more vulnerable to the dangers of these devices: children.

While researchers debate about how harmful cellphones and wearable computers actually are, most agree that children should exercise caution.

In an email, Hardell sent me research illustrating that a child's skull is thinner and smaller than an adult's, which means that children's brain tissues are more exposed to certain types of radiation, specifically the kind that emanates from a cellphone.

Children should limit how much time they spend talking on a cellphone, doctors say. And if they have a wearable device, they should take it off at night so it does not end up under their pillow, near their brain. Doctors also warn that women who are pregnant should be extra careful with all of these technologies.

But what about adults? After researching this column, talking to experts and poring over dozens of scientific papers, I have realized the dangers of cellphones when used for extended periods, and as a result I have stopped holding my phone next to my head and instead use a headset.

That being said, when it comes to wearable computers, I'll still buy the Apple Watch, but I won't let it go anywhere near my head. And I definitely won't let any children I know play with it for extended periods of time...

The Best Unknown Apps in the Play Store that come directly from Google Inc.

Did you know about these best unknown apps in the play store that come directly from Google Inc. itself?

Google isn’t only responsible for the Android OS and its marketplace. A whole bunch of apps in the play store comes directly from Google Inc. Itself. While you’ll know about many of the more well-liked ones, there are others that are lesser known, but still helpful.

Androidify

This recreational app from Google can actually be a lot of fun. Its self-descriptive name reveals what this app does. You can create android likenesses of you and your friends.

Car Home

This app will likely become much more important by the end of the year. With Google’s entry into automobiles with android Auto, the long forgotten Car Home app may just come into the limelight. The app allows you to quickly access functions that you may need while driving.

My Tracks

My Tracks is pretty similar to Google Fit app. It records your movements outside and allows you to annotate and share them with friends.

Google Gesture Search

Fan of gesture controls? This app allows you to search your android device using gestures. You can’t search the web, of course, but almost everything on your phone is searchable otherwise.

Chrome remote desktop

This richness app can be helpful for some. The Chrome Remote desktop application allows you to access and manage your PC from your android-based smartphone.

My Maps

Perhaps overshadowed by the Google Maps app, My Maps is something that frequent travelers will enjoy. It allows you to create your own custom maps and use them anywhere.

Snapseed

This photo ending tool from Google claims to be the only one that you’ll need on your phone. Try it and find out if the claims are real

Google Santa Tracker

The concept of tracking Santa isn’t exactly new. The story goes that in 1995, the number of a Santa tracking service was wrongly printed, with NORAD’s number instead. But, when people called the number, NORAD diligently told them the location of Saint Nick. In 2007, Google decided to go head-head-to-head with NORAD and the company has been doing it ever since.

YouTube creator studio

If you own a YouTube channel, then this app is made for you. The YouTube Creator Studio allows you to manage your channel from your phone while on the move.

Best Android Emulators for PC

Best Android Emulators for PC

Genymotion

Genymotion falls into the category of emulators meant mainly for app development and testing. In fact, this emulator can be used by an entire team of software developers to the support personnel. When this is meant for developer, it has many features meant for app development and testing, which would not mean much to a casual Android gamer or someone who wants to use an Android app on a big screen. It has features such as resizable windows, screencasts, Java API, command-line tool, CPU virtualization, sensor emulation, pre-configured devices, etc. One thing that is great about Genymotion is that you can simply drag-n-drop apps to install them on the device.

Genymotion can run on OS X, Windows, and Linux.

System Requirements:
  • 2GB RAM
  • 400 MB HDD

YouWave

YouWave is one the best Android emulators. It is based on VirtualBox and has own virtual disk space which is separate from the Windows File System. Its files are stored in Virtual Disk (VDI) files. You can access files inside YouWave through its shared folder or through cloud storage service like Google Drive, Dropbox etc.

The system requirements are not high and the interface is user-friendly and easy to navigate. One good thing about YouWave app is that it is compatible with Google Wallet and PayPal transactions. It is, however, a paid emulator and you will have to pay to use it after the trial period is over. The emulated Android environment also lacks the crispness and clarity of devices.

System Requirements:
  • Intel Pentium 1.6GHz CPU
  • 5GB DRAM
  • 500MB disk space
  • Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7/ Windows 8 (32/64 bit)

Bluestacks (trialware)

BlueStacks is very easy to set up – just go to its website, download, install and off you go. BlueStacks is best used for running Android games and light productivity apps. The user interface of BlueStacks is pretty good and feels just like using an Android phone on your desktop. It synchronizes with your Google account so you can even log into Google Play Store and download apps. The experience gets as close to stock Android as possible though it has been slightly modified for PC use.

System Requirements:

  • Windows 7/8/8.1/Vista/XP (32-bit)
  • 2GB RAM
  • 9GB HDD (for apps, games, and their data)

How to disable WhatsApp blue ticks for read messages
..

Recently, WhatsApp quietly introduced a new feature that lets users know that their messages have been read, with the double grey ticks appearing in front of the messages turning blue.

And now, just as quietly, the mobile messaging service is letting users of its Android app disable the feature with the rollout of WhatsApp version 2.11.444. This version is available for users on WhatsApp's website for now, and will eventually be rolled out to all users.

Here's how you can disable the blue coloured read receipts' with the message timestamp on WhatsApp's Android app:

1. Make sure that your smartphone is running on Android 2.1 or a newer version.

2. Go to settings menu and enable 'Download from Unknown Sources' in the Security tab

3. Go to the WhatsApp website and download the APK (application) file available under www.whatsapp.com/Android/

4. Once the APK file is downloaded to your device, tap the 'Install' option.

6. Now that WhatsApp has been updated, select Settings > Account > Privacy. Under the Privacy tab, uncheck the Read Receipts option.

This feature however doesn't apply to group messages and will let other participants know when you've read a message. Also, once you disable this feature, you won't be able to view blue double-check marks when you send a message as well.

The feature that enabled the users to see when their messages were read didn't go down too well with the users and with this update, WhatsApp seems to be taking steps to please users who were not happy with the new feature.

Google on its way to Introduce Payment App

Google is apparently taking care of a fresh Android-based obligations support, called “Plaso.” According to Business Insider, its support is being tested by the internet search engine at Panera breads and Papa Johns.

Consumers, now on a Google workers, have to provide the teller their initials to create a payment. Their initials will appear by retail merchants on the application for confirmation. The Android program designed for this particular function is not unlikely to be incorporated with Google Wallet.

Google transaction support works on the voice password, which experts consider to be an integral obstacle in contending with Apple the effective transaction entry program of Pay.

The iPhone-manufacturer joined packet-and-mortar retail, empowering the customers of its newest devices, iPhone 6 in addition to iPhone 6 plus, to buy items in shops. The business also went to sign relates to bank card retailers and leading credit, like Mastercard Inc and American Express Company .
