10 Lesser Known Windows Shortcuts To Make Life Easier

Keyboard short-cuts are the easiest way to navigate and get works done on any computers. It is quick, easy to remember and always at your fingertips. Unfortunately, the majority of the PC users are unaware of even the basic shortcuts. Here are 10 of the lesser known yet highly useful shortcuts.

1. Home and End key
If you are used to iOS devices like iPhone or iPad you should be very familiar with the nifty 'scroll to the top' feature that can be accessed by tapping anywhere on the status bar. This same feature can be accessed in Windows by hitting the 'Home' key on the keyboard. The 'End' key found next to it will take you want to go the end of a page.

2. Windows Key + 1, 2, 3...9
The quick way to launch an app in Windows is by clicking the shortcut pinned to the taskbar. A quicker way to launch apps is to use the shortcut 'Windows Key' with the number key corresponding to the position from left on the taskbar. For example, if Chrome is the second app pinned on your taskbar from left, then by hitting 'Win Key+2' will open the app. This can be used up to nine apps and make sure that your most commonly used apps are among the first nine apps pinned to the taskbar.

3. Win + T
If you have a habit of keeping lots of windows, tabs and apps while using your computer, then this is the shortcut for you. 'Win + T' gives you a quick overview of the apps and windows you that are open. It displays the live thumbnails of the apps in your taskbar, and you can jump between them one by one using the shortcut again.

4. Win + L
When using your computer in public spaces or if you are very focused on privacy and security, 'Win + L' will instantly lock your PC. It will save you time by going through the hassle of putting your computer to sleep or needing to log out. Hit the shortcut and your PC will be locked to and takes you to your login screen.

5. F2
F2 is one of the simplest yet rarely known keyboard shortcut in Windows. Using F2 after selecting a file or folder will let you rename them immediately from the explorer or even in the browser.

6. F3
The more files and folders we have the more difficult to find them by navigating. That is where the power of search becomes the most useful. The F3 short automatically moves the cursor to the search box, whether inside Windows Explorer or in any browser.

7. Win + home
When you have plenty of apps and windows open, it can be hard to focus on the current task at your hand. 'Win + Home' will minimize all your windows except the active one. Its function is same as the 'aero-shake' feature in Windows but quicker.

8. Ctrl + backspace
Instead of deleting the wrongly typed words letter by letter, 'Ctrl + Backspace' let you delete the whole word you typed the most recently. It saved a lot of time if you are not an expert typist also helps you to reduce repetitive stress injury as well.

9. Shift+ Del
'Shift + Delete' deletes files permanently without moving them to Recycle Bin. This is a secure way to delete your files if you don't want someone to dig it up from the Recycle Bin.

10. Ctrl + shift + esc
If you are someone who did spend time with Windows XP in the past, then you will certainly remember the shortcut 'Crtl + Alt + Delete' as it was the go-to shortcut to access Task Manager or to restart, when your PC froze. However in newer versions of Windows the shortcut will only take you as far as the Windows Security Screen, from where you have to access Task Manger. However by using 'Ctrl + shift + Esc' instead will take you to the Task Manager directly on any recent version of Windows.

Some Tools From Google to Boost Your Brand

Some Tools From Google to Boost Your Brand.....

Want to boost your brand and elevate your online exposure?
Google offers an arsenal of tools to make it possible. Some of these services are well known, while others are a bit obscure. What they all have in common is that they can make a big difference in how your company is seen online.

Check out these some tools and see how to improve your company’s branding.

1. Google My Business
If your business is brick and mortar, the first thing to do is get set up on Google Places. This ensures your business will show up prominently on searches and on Google Maps. Potential customers will readily find your hours, website and other key information.

Google owns more than 60 percent of all search traffic, and you don’t want to miss out by neglecting this chance at online visibility. It’s one of the easiest things you can do to raise your company’s branding for free.

2. Google Adwords
Mastering the Google Adwords advertising service isn’t simple, and there’s a whole industry dedicated to teaching people the ways of Adwords. However, it’s easy enough to get started and experiment. With Adwords, you can set an advertising budget for your business and then target certain geographic areas and keywords. Your ads will show up in search results.

You pay on a per-click basis, and you set the maximum amount you’re willing to pay per click. There’s a lot of potential if you tweak the settings to ensure the right kind of customers see your ads. There are numerous case studies on how businesses have effectively leveraged click-based advertising, so give these examples a look.

3. Google Analytics
Google Analytics is a no-brainer for websites. Using this free service gives you a good look at exactly how visitors are finding your website and how they’re using it. You can analyze the effectiveness of your Adwords campaign, in addition to a host of other customizable factors.

This is a powerful tool, and leveraging the results allows your brand to truly grow. You can see where people are dropping off from the site (is there a design flaw that needs to be fixed?) and what sources are bringing in not only the most traffic, but also the highest-quality customers.

There is a premium version of Google Analytics, but at $150,000 it’s not needed for most companies.

4. Google Maps
There’s a lot more to Google Maps beyond having a listing through Google My Business. The maps can be customized and shared with your customers, which is especially useful for companies with various locations or properties to show. For example, most successful real estate companies use maps to show multiple listings. These maps can be embedded on your website and be a great interactive tool for users. It’s a versatile tool that could be used to interest customers and provide enhanced usability.

5. Think With Google
Google’s “digital cheat sheet” looks at the latest marketing trends through articles, case studies and infographics. It’s a great opportunity to find some inspiration and see what’s working. Opt in to the email newsletter to stay up to date.

6. Google Alerts
Keep track of competitors and industry news with Google Alerts. Specify the keywords you want results for, and then Google will send you links to the newest content containing those keywords. Think along the lines of “Los Angeles, bakery” or “New York City, marketing.” Some of the results will be a little value, but others will provide you with instant insight into what others are doing online. There could be opportunities to take over that space with your own branding.

You can also get alerts for whenever someone mentions your name, which is a great way to follow-up with a “Thanks!” or keep track of links back to your site.

7. Google Trends
Another way to stay connected is through Google Trends. Search a keyword related to your company and then see the word’s popularity over time in Google searches. With a little research, these trends can reveal big opportunities.

Beyond These Tools
There are other options from Google that might help your company from within. Google Apps provides employees with Gmail, online calendars, shared documents and more starting at $50 a year per user. These integrate well with some of Google’s other products – particularly AdWords and Analytics – so it might be worth considering. Even if you don’t opt for it, the above tools will help bring your company’s profile to where you want it to be.

Some Strategies to Change How You Email..

Managing email can be a chore. It can steal time from more important tasks and even dull your brain. A University of London study found that those who constantly check their e-mail could see an IQ drop of 10 points, a steeper drop than from smoking pot.

So what can you do to prevent this loss of time, money and brain power? Here are some strategies to win back control.

1. Take short cuts: Write templated responses that can be easily updated to streamline the reply process. Google Labs, for example, even offers an option called "Canned Responses." To create canned responses that work for you, think ‘will someone ask me this question again’ when you write any email. Some productivity experts even save these as signatures that they can access while at the office or on the road.

2. Write better subject lines: Add a verb to your subject line – confirm, discuss, review – to better help your recipient understand what they need to do. This tactic will help spur action and keep you on target when you write. Make sure it’s search-friendly. Ask yourself: Does this subject line have the key words you’ll need to find it easily in the future?

3. Keep it simple: Productivity expert suggests keep emails to one topic and says people respond only when they have answers to all the questions they’ve been asked so a simpler email can ensure a faster response.

4. The magic five sentence-email: An effective e-mail will answer these questions – Who are you? What do you want? Why are you asking? Why should I help? What's next? If you can, try and keep your notes to five sentences or even three or four. Limiting yourself will help you focus on what’s important.

5. Designate a time: Turn off your alerts so you see how much you get done when you aren’t constantly reviewing your inbox. And set a timer. Experts recommend you check email just 2-4 times a day, reading email for only 45 minutes a session.

6. BCC Yourself: Need to track your follow up? Consider BCC-ing yourself on those emails and then moving them to a folder labeled “Follow up.” Check just this folder instead of your inbox to stay on top of the work you need to complete so you don’t get distracted.

7. Text, chat or call instead: When a discussion leads to more than two emails, pick up the phone or get on chat. Give your number to point people you trust to relay urgent messages, especially if you're out of the office.

8. Train your colleagues: If a conversation is settled, write "no reply needed" to prevent more emails in your box. Stress that staffers shouldn’t feel the need to reply to mail when they can’t best answer a question.

9. Don’t reply: Reply only when needed and don’t deal first with non-urgent e-mails. And don't reply if the 'ask' isn't clear. You shouldn’t waste time trying to understand a request that wasn’t well thought out to begin with.

10. Automate everything: Unsubscribe from unwanted newsletters, direct others to specific folders automatically and move anything you don’t need immediately to an archive. Use tools like Google calendar to schedule meetings, eliminating the need for endless “when are you free” email chains.

11. Be vigilant: Keep only two types of emails in your inbox: Those you haven’t read yet and those you need right away. Once you’ve pared down your inbox, you can focus only on the messages pertinent to what you’re working on now.

Why is it called Windows 10 and not Windows 9?

Why is it called Windows 10 and not Windows 9?

Now that Windows 10 development is in full swing, with the new Spartan browser and new Technical Preview builds appearing on a regular basis, let’s take a step back for a moment and address one of the most confusing things about the next version of Windows. When Microsoft announced its newest operating system, the surprise was not that it was coming, but that Windows would be skipping 9 and heading straight to 10. When asked about Windows 10’s name, Microsoft never gave a clear answer. So why, exactly, is Windows 10 getting the nod instead of 9?

Version numbers, schmersion numbers

You may remember that between Windows 3 and Windows 7, versions of Windows were designated by a name rather than a number: 95, 98, NT, Me, 2000, Vista, and so on. When Microsoft announced Windows 7, there was actually a similar amount of disbelief; after a series of named versions of Windows, it seemed odd to jump back to numbers.

There’s also the fact that the name of each Windows release doesn’t actually match the real version number. For example, Windows 8.1 is actually version 6.3 of Windows. Windows 10 is version 6.4. The last time the release name actually matched the version number was the enterprise-focused Windows NT 4.0, which was released back in 1996. Windows 2000, which was called NT 5.0 during development, was actually version 5.0. Windows XP was version 5.1. Windows Vista was 6.0, Windows 7 was 6.1, Windows 8 was 6.2, and Windows 8.1 is version 6.3.

Windows RT, which only ran Metro apps, was a new and separate beast, but it still sat on top of the core Windows NT kernel. It’s dead now.

Technically, modern versions of Windows are still based on the Vista kernel and code base — including Windows 10, which is actually Windows 6.4. There will be some confusion if (or when) we eventually reach internal version 7.0, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

Alternative theories for skipping Windows 9

First, Someone says in that 9 number is consider unlucky in Japan..
Microsoft has a big enough presence in Japan that it may have skipped Windows 9 to avoid any weirdness or ill will. Benny says that Trend Micro — a Japanese company — did the same thing a few years ago when it skipped version 9 of its antivirus software.

Second, someone purporting to be a Microsoft developer posted this comment on Reddit:

As dumb and yet amazing as this sounds, it is actually quite feasible that there are still a lot of legacy Desktop apps that use this method (or something similar) to check for Windows 95 or 98. Bear in mind that this is just an example piece of code — some developers will check for the OS name (“Windows…”), some will check for the version number (as discussed in the previous section of this story), and some may use other methods entirely to find out what OS the app is running on.

What’s in a name?

Ultimately, Windows 10 is just a name. Windows 9 probably would’ve made more sense — and it’s going to cause some grief with novice users who just don’t understand what happened to Windows 9. But Windows 10 isn’t any more right or wrong than calling Vista’s successor Windows 7.

A better question to ask now: Why did Microsoft call it Windows 10 specifically, and not something else? During the unveil event (video embedded above) Myerson gives us a few clues. Starting at around the 2:10 mark, he says: “We know, based on the product that’s coming, and just how different our approach will be overall, it wouldn’t be right to call it Windows 9.” He then talks about how Windows One would make sense with Xbox One, OneDrive, and OneNote, “but unfortunately Windows 1 has been done by the giants that came before us.” And so it seems the only other viable option was Windows 10.

Most loved and Most hated programming language – PHP

In 2004, when Mark Zuckerberg sat down to create the site that needs no introduction, he chose PHP. Moving forward the code grew and it is currently one of the biggest websites the world has ever seen. If you know the early history of Facebook, you’d know that it was not meant to be the behemoth that it is today. There had to be something wise about Mark to choose PHP for the task and something equally incredible from PHP to carry his website to create a worldwide phenomenon. Probably it is the same thing in PHP which attracts or attracted anyone else to work with it.

Welcome to the world’s most loved and most hated programming language – PHP.

History

PHP was originally called PHP/FI (Personal Home Page/ Form Interpreter) in 1994 when it was originally designed and was renamed to PHP Tools in 1995 before it was renamed to just PHP in 1997 with the release of version 3.0. The initial name of PHP clearly suggests that it was not designed to be what it appears as today – the king of web programming language. The initial public release of PHP in 1995 had quite surprisingly a large set of the basic capabilities that it still has today and made mostly internal improvements across versions.

Significance and programming

PHP is known for being one of the easiest programming languages to start off with, and is thus used by a large number of programmers who are starting out.

Another point where PHP shines out is being an almost web-exclusive language. While PHP can be easily and effectively used for system scripts, it was built for handling websites and flaunts features which address issues specific to web development such as handling forms submission, user sessions, cookies and loose data types. PHP is designed to work in a ‘single request-single response’ environment where the script starts working when a request comes in, processes the request, generates the response, sends it to the client and then exists. The next time the same script it’s requested, it runs again, serves the request and again ends the requests sporadically to the server. At the same time, it can also be used to create sustainable services, which keep running indefinitely. This makes PHP suitable for working with WebSockets API introduced in PHP5.

How does PHP look?

$x = 2;

$x_square = $x *$x;

$result = “The square of $x is: “ .$x_square;

Echo $result;

?>

This small program shows a good deal of features of PHP which make web development easy. The output of this program is:

Value of $x is 2 The square of 2 is: 4

I have shown a simple example above.

Wearable computers as harmful as cigarettes..????

In 1946, a new advertising campaign appeared in magazines with a picture of a doctor in a lab coat holding a cigarette and the slogan, "More doctors smoke Camels than any other cigarette." No, this wasn't a spoof. Back then, doctors were not aware that smoking could cause cancer, heart disease and lung disease.

In a similar vein, some researchers and consumers are now asking whether wearable computers will be considered harmful in several decades' time.

We have long suspected that cellphones, which give off low levels of radiation, could lead to brain tumors, cancer, disturbed blood rhythms and other health problems if held too close to the body for extended periods.

Yet here we are in 2015, with companies like Apple and Samsung encouraging us to buy gadgets that we should attach to our bodies all day long.

While there is no definitive research on the health effects of wearable computers (the Apple Watch isn't even on store shelves yet), we can hypothesize a bit from existing research on cellphone radiation.

The most definitive and arguably unbiased results in this area come from the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a panel within the World Health Organization (WHO) that consisted of 31 scientists from 14 countries.

After dissecting dozens of peer-reviewed studies on cellphone safety, the panel concluded in 2011 that cellphones were "possibly carcinogenic" and that the devices could be as harmful as certain dry-cleaning chemicals and pesticides. (Note that the group hedged its findings with the word "possibly.")

The WHO panel concluded that the farther away a device is from one's head, the less harmful -- so texting or surfing the Web will not be as dangerous as making calls, with a cellphone inches from the brain. (This is why there were serious concerns about Google Glass when it was first announced and why we've been told to use hands-free devices when talking on cellphones.)

A longitudinal study conducted by a group of European researchers and led by Dr Lennart Hardell, a professor of oncology and cancer epidemiology at Orebro University Hospital in Sweden, concluded that talking on a mobile or cordless phone for extended periods could triple the risk of a certain kind of brain cancer.

There is, of course, antithetical research. But some of this was partly funded by cellphone companies or trade groups.

One example is the international Interphone study, which was published in 2010 and did not find strong links between mobile phones and an increased risk of brain tumors.

Another study, in The BMJ, which measured cellphone subscription data rather than actual use, said there was no proof of increased cancer. Yet even here, the Danish team behind the report acknowledged that a "small to moderate increase" in cancer risk among heavy cellphone users could not be ruled out.

But what does all this research tell the Apple faithful who want to rush out and buy an Apple Watch, or the Google and Windows fanatics who are eager to own an alternative smartwatch.

Dr Joseph Mercola, a physician who focuses on alternative medicine and has written extensively about the potential harmful effects of cellphones on the human body, said that as long as a wearable does not have a 3G connection built into it, the harmful effects are minimal, if any.

"The radiation really comes from the 3G connection on a cellphone, so devices like the Jawbone Up and Apple Watch should be OK," Mercola said in a phone interview. "But if you're buying a watch with a cellular chip built in, then you've got a cellphone attached to your wrist." And that, he said, is a bad idea.

(The Apple Watch uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to receive data, and researchers say there is no proven harm from those frequencies on the human body. Wearables with 3G or 4G connections built in, including the Samsung Gear S, could be more harmful, though that has not been proved. Apple declined to comment for this article, and Samsung could not be reached for comment.)

Researchers have also raised concerns about having powerful batteries so close to the body for extended periods of time. Some reports over the last several decades have questioned whether being too close to power lines could cause leukemia (though other research has also negated this).

So what should consumers do? Perhaps we can look at how researchers themselves handle their smartphones.

While Mercola is a vocal proponent of cellphone safety, he told me to call him on his cell when I emailed about an interview. When I asked him whether he was being hypocritical, he replied that technology is a fact of life, and that he uses it with caution. As an example, he said he was using a Bluetooth headset during our call.

In the same respect, people who are concerned about the possible side effects of a smartwatch should avoid placing it close to their brain (besides, it looks a little strange). But there are some people who may be more vulnerable to the dangers of these devices: children.

While researchers debate about how harmful cellphones and wearable computers actually are, most agree that children should exercise caution.

In an email, Hardell sent me research illustrating that a child's skull is thinner and smaller than an adult's, which means that children's brain tissues are more exposed to certain types of radiation, specifically the kind that emanates from a cellphone.

Children should limit how much time they spend talking on a cellphone, doctors say. And if they have a wearable device, they should take it off at night so it does not end up under their pillow, near their brain. Doctors also warn that women who are pregnant should be extra careful with all of these technologies.

But what about adults? After researching this column, talking to experts and poring over dozens of scientific papers, I have realized the dangers of cellphones when used for extended periods, and as a result I have stopped holding my phone next to my head and instead use a headset.

That being said, when it comes to wearable computers, I'll still buy the Apple Watch, but I won't let it go anywhere near my head. And I definitely won't let any children I know play with it for extended periods of time...

The Best Unknown Apps in the Play Store that come directly from Google Inc.

Did you know about these best unknown apps in the play store that come directly from Google Inc. itself?

Google isn’t only responsible for the Android OS and its marketplace. A whole bunch of apps in the play store comes directly from Google Inc. Itself. While you’ll know about many of the more well-liked ones, there are others that are lesser known, but still helpful.

Androidify

This recreational app from Google can actually be a lot of fun. Its self-descriptive name reveals what this app does. You can create android likenesses of you and your friends.

Car Home

This app will likely become much more important by the end of the year. With Google’s entry into automobiles with android Auto, the long forgotten Car Home app may just come into the limelight. The app allows you to quickly access functions that you may need while driving.

My Tracks

My Tracks is pretty similar to Google Fit app. It records your movements outside and allows you to annotate and share them with friends.

This richness app can be helpful for some. The Chrome Remote desktop application allows you to access and manage your PC from your android-based smartphone.

Perhaps overshadowed by the Google Maps app, My Maps is something that frequent travelers will enjoy. It allows you to create your own custom maps and use them anywhere.

This photo ending tool from Google claims to be the only one that you’ll need on your phone. Try it and find out if the claims are real

Google Santa Tracker

The concept of tracking Santa isn’t exactly new. The story goes that in 1995, the number of a Santa tracking service was wrongly printed, with NORAD’s number instead. But, when people called the number, NORAD diligently told them the location of Saint Nick. In 2007, Google decided to go head-head-to-head with NORAD and the company has been doing it ever since.

Best Android Emulators for PC

Best Android Emulators for PC

Genymotion

Genymotion falls into the category of emulators meant mainly for app development and testing. In fact, this emulator can be used by an entire team of software developers to the support personnel. When this is meant for developer, it has many features meant for app development and testing, which would not mean much to a casual Android gamer or someone who wants to use an Android app on a big screen. It has features such as resizable windows, screencasts, Java API, command-line tool, CPU virtualization, sensor emulation, pre-configured devices, etc. One thing that is great about Genymotion is that you can simply drag-n-drop apps to install them on the device.

Genymotion can run on OS X, Windows, and Linux.

System Requirements:
  • 2GB RAM
  • 400 MB HDD

YouWave

YouWave is one the best Android emulators. It is based on VirtualBox and has own virtual disk space which is separate from the Windows File System. Its files are stored in Virtual Disk (VDI) files. You can access files inside YouWave through its shared folder or through cloud storage service like Google Drive, Dropbox etc.

The system requirements are not high and the interface is user-friendly and easy to navigate. One good thing about YouWave app is that it is compatible with Google Wallet and PayPal transactions. It is, however, a paid emulator and you will have to pay to use it after the trial period is over. The emulated Android environment also lacks the crispness and clarity of devices.

System Requirements:
  • Intel Pentium 1.6GHz CPU
  • 5GB DRAM
  • 500MB disk space
  • Windows XP/Vista/Windows 7/ Windows 8 (32/64 bit)

Bluestacks (trialware)

BlueStacks is very easy to set up – just go to its website, download, install and off you go. BlueStacks is best used for running Android games and light productivity apps. The user interface of BlueStacks is pretty good and feels just like using an Android phone on your desktop. It synchronizes with your Google account so you can even log into Google Play Store and download apps. The experience gets as close to stock Android as possible though it has been slightly modified for PC use.

System Requirements:

  • Windows 7/8/8.1/Vista/XP (32-bit)
  • 2GB RAM
  • 9GB HDD (for apps, games, and their data)

How to disable WhatsApp blue ticks for read messages
..

Recently, WhatsApp quietly introduced a new feature that lets users know that their messages have been read, with the double grey ticks appearing in front of the messages turning blue.

And now, just as quietly, the mobile messaging service is letting users of its Android app disable the feature with the rollout of WhatsApp version 2.11.444. This version is available for users on WhatsApp's website for now, and will eventually be rolled out to all users.

Here's how you can disable the blue coloured read receipts' with the message timestamp on WhatsApp's Android app:

1. Make sure that your smartphone is running on Android 2.1 or a newer version.

2. Go to settings menu and enable 'Download from Unknown Sources' in the Security tab

3. Go to the WhatsApp website and download the APK (application) file available under www.whatsapp.com/Android/

4. Once the APK file is downloaded to your device, tap the 'Install' option.

6. Now that WhatsApp has been updated, select Settings > Account > Privacy. Under the Privacy tab, uncheck the Read Receipts option.

This feature however doesn't apply to group messages and will let other participants know when you've read a message. Also, once you disable this feature, you won't be able to view blue double-check marks when you send a message as well.

The feature that enabled the users to see when their messages were read didn't go down too well with the users and with this update, WhatsApp seems to be taking steps to please users who were not happy with the new feature.
